April 2nd, 2007The CPH STL project has just been evaluated by some of our foreign partners. In general, the evaluations were positive. When dark thoughts are dominating and I feel that we are making little progress, I will definitely reread the evaluations to cheer up my mind. The evaluations pointed out that the main shortcoming of the CPH STL project is the lack of a public release. We are well aware of this. Most of the components have been developed by my students, but after finishing their project they disappear---if I am not lucky enough to get them to write their master's thesis for me. In the very beginning, for me the main challenge of the project was organizational and pedagogical: can I get my students to deliver an industry-strength program library. The answer is: almost. The code base requires integration and packaging work to reach the level of maturity needed for a 1.0 release. And this requires people with long-term commitment to the project. We have made yet another attempt to get funding---and continuity---for the project. You may look at CPH STL Report 2007-2 for further details. The report is edited by Lars Yde, with whom I actually started the whole project. Let us keep our fingers crossed that we will get the necessary funding and the CPH STL release version 1.0 out.
